Torre del Mangia

Seeing as how I just imagined being in the Cinque Terre I thought I'd take an imaginary train to Siena and stick around Italy for awhile longer.

Siena's center is a visual treat; it features a large sloped plaza, la Piazza del Campo, overlooked by a slim tower of brick topped with marble, la Torre del Mangia. The plaza is the site of a famous annual horse race.

La Torre del Mangia was built around 1348. The tower was built to the same height as the Siena Cathedral and its height is said to have been chosen to show that the church and state had equal power. Paul and I climbed to the top of the tower to check out the views and take some photos.
