We are in Roma. In the photo below Paul is standing in front of our ground-floor apartment. (Well, it is the green door to his right.) My back (I am photographer) is to Palazzo Farnesi which is a palace that is now the French embassy. At the end of the block is Piazza Farnesi and a block further is Campo de'Fiori. In the opposite direction is the river Tiber and the Trastevere neighborhood, where we will be headed next.

Roma is not what I remember. Of course that was decades ago, and it was pre-internet. Vacations were shorter. Trips were rushed. I remember little of Roma aside from a short stay at a grim hotel around the corner from Roma Termini, followed by the train to Florence then on to a seaside town on the beautiful cinque terre.

The high speed train between Roma and Napoli takes about an hour. We took instead a slower train, 3.5 hours, first class, as we decided we would rather be on the train than waiting for the flat to be ready. This worked out, the train car was roomy and almost empty. Quiet, plenty of luggage space, and the WC was working. We splurged on a taxi to the apartment: the walk was long and the cobblestones are a pain with rolling luggage.

Buskers on Ponte Sisto

After unpacking and taking a break we headed over to the Tiber river then across the river to Trastevere. We crossed the river via the Ponte Sisto, a pedestrian-only bridge.

The Tiber at night

According to my travel guide, this part of the Tiber River once flooded frequently. In the 1870s, the Romans removed the threat of flooding by walling off the Tiber. They built the tall, anonymous embankments that continue to isolate the river from the city today.

Just across the bridge we encountered a couple of parked Carabinieri plus a crowd of mostly young people singing along with a busker, popular music from artists like REM, Sting and U2.

Trapizzino

Trapizzino makes little hand-held taco-like pizzas. Very tasty and very popular. Grab one to go, with a beer, or sit at a table.
