Along the trail we encountered a memorial for a fallen mountaineer. It is for a Georgian fellow, Michele Kerghiani, aka "Tiger of the Cliffs," who died in a fall from the summit of Monte Civetta. The text on the monument says:
"A ricordo dell alpinista della Georgia Sovietica Michele Kerghiani perito tragicamente nel 1969 sulle Dolomiti"
"In memory of the mountaineer from Soviet Georgia, Michele Kerghiani, who tragically perished in 1969 in the Dolomites."
