After a week of record heat we are experiencing cold temperatures and strong offshore winds on the southwestern tip of Canada. Shorts and sandals have been stashed away, replaced by a long-sleeved shirt, a jacket, and a wool hat. And the heat is back on in some rooms of the house. It's July, we'd typically not be thinking about lighting a fire in the wood stove.

The tomatoes in the greenhouse must be puzzled with the weather. They are well-laden with fruits though only one plant's produce is ready to eat. The lettuce didn't like the heat, half the plants died before I moved them out of the sun, but the survivors are looking good. The strawberries just go with the flow; hot, cold, they soldier on producing delicious berries. And then there is the basil. Nothing seems to satisfy these fellows. Looks like my pesto is coming from a jar.

Coincidentally, this month's book club reading is Seth Klein's A Good War, a manifesto for Canada and the climate emergency.
