It'd be nice if I could write that these photos were just taken yesterday but I can't, they're from 2010. You see I was thinking about Turkey as I saw something in the news about the Hagia Sophia and it reminded me of our trip to Istanbul and thereabouts (which was well before I started this blog).

So to recap, in the fall of 2010 we flew to Istanbul, with a friend. The photos below were taken the day we visited the Hagia Sophia.

Just finished a New Yorker, the June 22 issue with George Floyd on the cover, which I found full of thoughtful articles. The history of ignored civil rights commissions. On the ground with the protesters in Minneapolis. The southern state prison system that could be mistaken for a plantation in the pre-civil-war American south. The year 2020 sure isn't making out to be the shiny new future I was expecting.

Speaking of being stuck in the past, today I'm looking at photos of a very old building in Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia was built in 537 and was the largest cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years. It has also been a mosque and a museum and is now a mosque again. It was a museum when these photos were taken. You can of course read about it on wikipedia.

This shot was taken with a wide angle lens, 11mm on APS-C. Still I wish I'd taken a panoramic set of photos that I could stitch together.

Of course if you're visiting Istanbul you have to check out the giant Blue Mosque. But first you have to get past the fellows who want to sell you something and then the crowds of tourists (of which I am one).

The Cistern

Down the street from our Istanbul hotel was the Basilica Cistern, largest of Istanbul's many cisterns. It dates to the 6th century. It's the most beautiful hole in the ground for collecting water that I've seen. Climbing down into the cavernous space felt like entering a sunken temple, except that this one was partially submerged in water and even had some fish in it. Of course the wonderful wikipedia has all you need to know, such as the cistern's size (138 x 65 m or 453 x 213 ft) and the skinny on all those columns (336 marble columns each 9 m or about 30 ft tall).

One evening (this is 2010) we walked to another part of town to eat and check out the night life. So we crossed a busy road then passed a ferry being loaded. Next we walked the length of the Galata Bridge and then up the hill on the other side to our busy destination. Along the way we passed the 5th-century Galata Tower.

The Bosporus

It was a sunny day so we caught a ferry and took it up the Bosphorus, the strait that divides Europe from Asia and connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The Bosporus cuts through Istanbul placing half the city in one continent, the other half in another.

We got off at the town of Anadolu Kavagi, which is almost to the Black sea, to walk and have lunch. I took a few photos. I saw signs warning not to photograph anything military so I didn't. We then took a ferry back the way we came, our eyes on the shoreline lined with homes, arriving in Istanbul just before dark.

Just another doorway

I'll resist looking at more photos taken around Santa Cruz and resume where I was, which is in Turkey in September 2010.

Istanbul's Spice Bazaar is a large spice-oriented market hidden behind a nondescript doorway. It dates back to the mid-1600s. The market has about 85 shops selling spices, sweets, jewellery, souvenirs, and dried fruits and nuts.

8. Grand Bazaar
, Monday, 24 August 2020 ~ Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul's Grand Bazaar is a lot larger than the Spice Bazaar with thousands of places to spend your Turkish lira. It's old, with parts of the bazaar dating back to the mid 1400s.

The entrance to the bazaar is just an arched doorway facing a street. Inside is a maze of enclosed streets lined with small shops. Those selling similar things, say gold or women's dresses or ceramic dishes, appear together, which can either make comparisons easy or lead to decision paralysis.

The Grand Bazaar reminds me of the visually-uninteresting multi-level Bangkok shopping mall where my need for a cellphone case lead me to a whole floor of shops selling cellphone cases, presenting me with so many choices I couldn't choose.

Before I leave Istanbul a few photos of our hotel, the Kybele. It's in the middle of the tourist area so it's convenient to the major sights and rich in cafes. The downside is the shopkeepers here seemed to be especially aggressive (and that's putting it nicely).
