We stepped off the train, exited the train station, then bought vaporetto tickets from a canal side vendor.

The Palanca vaporetto stop is on line 2. Line 2 goes back and forth between two different but adjacent San Marco stops, passing the train station and our apartment along the way. The sign says you must validate your ticket. Or better yet, buy a multi-day pass.
