The Place des Vosges is a pretty square in the Marais. To get there I walked past city hall, rows of bicycles, and many sidewalk cafes.
The Place des Vosges (originally named Place Royale) is the oldest planned square in Paris. It's in the Marais district, straddling the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. The square is enclosed by beautiful buildings containing arcades, chic shops, and cafes. The upper floors contain apartments. The most famous resident of the Place des Vosges was Victor Hugo, whose Les Misérables (published in 1862) was my choice for travel novel for this trip—and what a wonderful novel it is!

This fellow was standing in one of the entries to the Place des Vosges singing his heart out, operatic music, and boy can he sing! There was a rapt crowd for his performance, he filled the arcade with his beautiful voice.
