We left Chamonix for Zermatt, which would end up taking ten days since much was on foot. The plan was to start with a cable car from the northeast end of the Chamonix valley. It would leave us near our trailhead and we could begin walking. But the cable cars weren't running due to stormy weather, so we took a different route, one that started with a train ride.
