Collateral Event of the 59th International

Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia

Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello di Venezia

23 April - 27 November 2022

Inspired by the phenomenon of entropy, a measure of disorder that is increasingly evident in our society this exhibition brings together diverse and thought-provoking works in various media, including some *interdisciplinary collaboration between music and visual art.

The eleven participating visual artists have responded innovatively and aesthetically to different issues such as environmental pollution, global warming, racism, political activism, health hazards, uncurbed globalisation, unregulated digitalisation, excessive waste, widespread greed, the rampant thirst for power, and disproportionate wealth accumulation. All of these, over recent decades, have been gradually overwhelming our day-to-day life, the environment, and our social and collective histories. The damaging consequences of many of humanity's actions are seriously undermining life on planet Earth.

Entropy as defined within the second law of thermodynamics became known to us thanks to the research of physicist Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888), who in 1865 introduced the concept to the scientific world. One particularity of entropy is that it can reach a dangerous level within a system when external conditions, such as temperature, pressure and information overload, increase over time and cause unpredictable chaos, which can in turn lead to irreversible impairment. Nevertheless, each of the artists showing in this exhibition has approached their work with an unbiassed mind and the hope of re-opening a door into the future.

Entertaining. Three large screens, the middle mostly features men chanting (Bolivia? Bhutan? Burma?), the other two screens show Death Valley or the Andes or train travels or screens full of brightly colored flags. What's it all mean? Hmm, I'll have to go home and read the guide book which is full of text most of which, no, all of which, makes no sense to me.
