Matera is known for its rock-cut buildings, which are buildings created by excavating solid rock from where it naturally occurs. This was hard work considering the tools available at the time. Matera dates back to the Palaeolithic, 10th millennium BC. The rocks that were removed were presumably used elsewhere for more construction.
